The plan was to host 67 guests to spend 67 minutes baking at Sydney’s Our Big Kitchen to commemorate the 67 years of Nelson Mandela’s public life…but  the kitchen was packed to capacity.

More than 120 volunteers turned up including local State Member of Parliament Gabrielle Upton, Liberal MLC David Clarke, Labor Senator Matt Thistlewaite, Waverley Councillor Tony Kaye Waverley Mayor John Wakefield and  NSW Minister for Citizenship and Communities Victor Dominello.

The ovens were kept busy as 1000 meals were prepared prior to their distribution to a raft of charities. Our Big Kitchen CEO Rabbi Dovid Slavin told J-Wire: “South Afrtica’s Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein had called for members of that country’s Jewry to spend 67 minutes giving to help the needy and I thought that there was such a large South African presence in Australia that it was an idea worth emulating.”

But the call for 67 volunteers was hear by almost double that number creating the largest number of participants ever at Our Big Kitchen.

Senator Matt Thistlewaite represented Premier Barry O’Farrell at the special Mandela Day being held in a country a long way from Mandela’s domain but which is now home to thousands of South Africans.

And when it was all over, special delivery vans were wending their way through the streets of Sydney to distribute 1,000 meals to those in need of a little help on the 94th birthday of a man who helped his nation at an enormous price.

As long as it is the same Mandela who called Arafat his best friend and threw the weight of his decades long experience behind the palestinian cause.

I hope that making comments about Mandela is ok here, because over in South Africa I could wear a cool/hot Michellin neck ornament for the above……
