The Holocaust remembered in Auckland
Auckland has hosted an International Holocaust Remembrance day…a J-Wire video report from Keren Cook.
The timing of today’s event is poignant with the rise of antisemitism over the past few months in Europe and the Middle East.
Perry Trotter from ‘Shadows of Shoah’ told J-Wire: “There has been a surge in antisemitism and it’s of grave concern, and that’s part of the motivation for the work that we do with Shadows of Shoah.”
Two events were scheduled at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. This morning Auckland Mayor Len Brown spoke in a compelling way, sharing his own personal experience visiting Auschwitz last year. Holocaust survivors Benjamin Steiner, Bob Narev and Dr Ralph Anspach also shared a few words about their survivor experiences. The commemoration was attended by City Councillors, dignitaries, religious and community leaders.
Tonight the Auckland Museum will host a free public event at which over 200 people are expected to attend. The evening will showcase guest speakers, a film and unique multi-media Holocaust work by Shadows of Shoah.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau as an annual international day of commemoration to honour the victims of the Holocaust.
