Hezbollah remains on the terrorist list
The Australian Government has re-listed Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation.
Singling out Hezbollah’s External Security Organisation, the Government has not included the group’s internal wing under the same classification.
Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council Executive Director Dr Colin Rubenstein has pointed the delineation out to the Parliamentary Joint committee on Intelligence and Security.
In a submission to the committee, Rubenstein underlined that the Hezbollah leadership makes no distinction between its political and military wings and that some statements and actions attributed to the organisation’s political wing fit the legal definition of a terrorist organisation. He added that funds given to one group would filter to the other and therefore as funding a listed terrorist group is illegal under Australian Law, the two wings should be treated as one.
He said to J-Wire: “Hezbollah’s leadership has explicitly ruled out any distinction between its external and internal wings. I call on the Attorney-General to correct this illogical loophole in Australian law and have Hezbollah listed as a terrorist group in its entirety.”
