He’s Australian from Laotian parentage…but he loves Yiddish
Akarin Siriamphone loves Yiddish…he talks with Henry Greener.
His fascination and attraction to this hardly-spoken Jewish language goes back to early childhood and has maintained his attention to the point where he is receiving a scholarship to study Yiddish online at Tel Aviv University by recommendation from Prof Rebecca Margolis of Monash University, where he is currently a student.
Influenced by videos of Canadian Prof Kalman Weiser, Akarin has been schmoozing with Bubba (Helen Mizrahi) at the Kadimah, visited Sholem Aleichem College, hung out with Haredis in Ripponlea and visited Gold’s Bookshop to get closer to Yiddish culture, language and music. He sings his favourite Yiddish song Öyfn veg shtayt a boym””, which can be seen at the end of the show
