Henry Greener chats with Rabbi Dr Benjamin Elton
Sydney’s The Great Synagogue’s Rabbi Dr Benjamin Elton is a prominent example of the new breed of young rabbis who have put a modern slant on Orthodox Judaism.
Born and bred in Manchester UK, he has an MA from Cambridge, PhD from the Uni. of London, worked for the Ministry of Justice in London for 7 years, then studied 4 years at Yeshivat Choveie Torah in New York, where he met his wife Hinda Young. Since 2015, when he was appointed Chief Minister, Rabbi Elton has made a strong impact on the congregation of the Great Synagogue, as well as taking on key roles in other organizations.
A good interview with Rabbi Elton. However, his comments on how the Modern Orthodox conversion process compares with the Progressive are not right and could be seen to belittle the Progressive. I ask that you contact Rabbi Jeffrey Kamins at Emanuel Synagogue to get a more accurate comparison.
