Goulburn’s Jewish Cemetery
The Jewish cemetery in Goulburn is a NSW state heritage site and requires a conservation management plan to ensure its preservation.
The CMP will ensure the cemetery will receive government grants and will allow changes to the site.
To be accepted, the plan must go on public display for a few weeks in case any one wants to comment.
The three trustees for the cemetery were also trustees for the main Jewish cemetery at Rookwood.
There was no formal synagogue in Gouldburneven though the community got a land grant for one plus a school.
It was handed back to the government and is now part of South Goulburn Public School.
The government paid the community £800 in the 1880s for the land and that grew with interest to £2000 when it was claimed by the Great Synagogue.
Half of the money was used to establish a Jewish day school in North Bondi which two laters became Moriah College.
In the days when there was a sizable community in Goulburn, records show that Jewish businesses were closed for Rosh Hashanah when private homes held the services.
The Goulburn Jewish Cemetery is the only Jewish burial place owned by the community.
There were 32 known burials.
Trustee Gary Luke told J-Wire: The CMP isn’t granted just because it’s of Jewish significance. It’s significant in understanding the historical demographic history of New South Wales.”
Jewish population of Goulburn:
1861 – approx 75
1881 – approx 12
