Gillard welcomes ceasefire

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has welcomed the ceasefire and issued the following statement yesterday…

The Australian Government welcomes the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel which commenced at 6:00am AEDT today.

Australia urges all sides to adhere to the terms of the ceasefire.  It will be particularly important that there be no return to rocket fire from Gaza.

Australia commends Egypt’s leadership role in brokering this agreement, supported by the efforts of the United States, United Nations Secretary General and other regional countries.

The intervention of Egyptian President Morsi is a welcome demonstration of Egypt’s regional leadership.

Recent events highlight the importance of a durable solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Australia reiterates its call on both sides to resume negotiations towards a two-state solution comprising an independent Palestinian state with agreed borders alongside a secure Israel.

Australia condemns the terrorist attack on a bus in Israel on November 21, which injured more than 20 people, and expresses sympathy to those affected by the attack.
