Gift of Life testing in Canberra
The ACT Jewish community was invited to be tested as potential life-saving blood stem cell donors for Jewish blood cancer patients whose family members were not found to be matching.
The testing session on behalf of the Gift of Life was held at the Jewish Community Centre in Canberra.
Due to inclement weather many had to cancel as their homes and the university accommodation was flooded and the roads were impassable.
Four wonderful medical folks who had volunteered arrived to collect blood. These included Drs Alan Shroot and David Reiner, specialist blood collectors Deb Sims and Tim Riegerix. Debbie Redelman, long-standing Gift of Life volunteer from Sydney came to town to help.
However, anyone in Canberra or the ACT who is eligible to save the lives of Jewish blood cancer patients and is of Jewish descent, healthy, 18-45yo, 50+kg, neither pregnant nor breastfeeding can join the Australian stem cell and Bone Marrow Donor Registry at the same time as donating blood at the Red Cross Blood Collection Centre, 3 Dann Cl, Garran. Bookings are essential as special forms and test tubes are needed. Call 131495 or www.donateblood.com or call Shula 0414 780 444.
