From Michael Danby’s Diary
Two dates for Melbourne readers.
On the 27th of January, it will be the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Death Camp, by the armies of the former Soviet Union. You may wish to join the hour long commemoration at the Elwood Synagogue (Melway Ref: 67 B3, 39 Dickens Street, Elwood) at 6pm on that day. A woman survivor who was liberated from Auschwitz and one of the Jewish soldiers in the Red Army who liberated Auschwitz will participate in the ceremony.
• On February 15, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard will join with me, as well as the Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O’Connor and Parliamentary Secretary Bill Shorten MP, at a dinner to express the gratitude of all Jewish schools for the extensive Federal Government support. It will be held at the St. Kilda Town Hall (cnr Carlisle St and St. Kilda Rd), at a cost of $65 per head. Guests should arrive at 6:30pm.
