Friday night with the Murdochs
A packed Central Synagogue in Sydney where Rabbi Levi Wolff publicly thanked media giant Ruport Murdoch for his support for Israel and the Jewish community.
Murdoch attended Central with his Jewish wife Elena and son Lachlan, accompanied by his wife Sarah for the entire Friday night Shabbat service.
In his address (see video below) Murdoch predicted that American support will climb steeply on January 20 when Trump becomes president.
In welcoming the Murdoch family, Rabbi Wolff told the congregation that Lachlan had visited Kibbutz Be’eri and Sarah had visited Auschwitz. He said: “Sarah has visited Auschwitz and Birkenau, and she has seen up close the face of evil, and she has been able to call out hate and evil like no one else in this country.”
He said the Murdochs “have been incredibly supportive of Israel’s absolute right to be able to defend itself.”
He pointed out that Rupert and Elena had visited the burnt-out remains of the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne of their own volition. Rabbi Wolff commented: “I cannot tell you how powerful those images mean to the Jewish people the world over. We are honored that you have come here today because tonight, we here want to express to you our greatest and deepest debt of gratitude.”
In a powerful moment, Rabbi Wolff told the Murdochs they are a family with influence,” but even more a family with greater moral courage to stand on the right side of history.”
Rupert Murdoch addressed the congregation with poignant words on Israel:
