“Free Palestine” under an Israeli flag in Sydney
Graffiti featuring the words “Free Palestine” was spray painted on the wall in front of Sydney’s Woollahra Council Chambers last week.
It was promptly removed within hours a few hours.
The graffiti was located adjacent to the flagpoles where the Australian flag, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, and the most recent addition – the Israeli Flag are flying.
Woollahra Council passed a unanimous resolution in early October to fly the Israeli flag in condemnation of the attack on Israel by Hamas and as a sign of solidarity and support for members of the Jewish community.
Mayor of Woollahra Councillor Richard Shields said he was disgusted by the graffiti on Council property, which was reported to the police.
He told J-Wire: “This kind of destructive act, and instances of intimidation and threats of death and violence seen across Sydney are illegal, they are not characteristics of freedom of speech and are a contradiction to our country’s values and must be stopped.
It’s no coincidence that this crime has occurred under the Israeli flag, which will continue to be flown until all Israeli hostages are released.
I am grateful to Council staff for the speedy removal of the graffiti.”
