J-Wire has lost one of its closest friends with the passing of music reviewer Fraser Beath McEwing who passed away overnight at the age of 86.

Fraser Beath McEwing

It suffice to note at this juncture that Fraser penned his first column for J-Wire in February 2012.

It was to be the first of 198 reviews, mostly of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

The last was a few weeks ago when the SSO performed Mahler’s 5th Symphony. Fraser told me that its fourth movement was, for him, the most beautiful music ever written.

Fraser’s funeral will be held at the Jewish cemetery in Bowral on Wednesday.

We wish a long life to Michelle and to the extended family.

Today is a sad Sunday for all who were privileged to have known him. He was loved by all.

Following the funeral, J-Wire will publish an in-depth appraisal of the journalist, pianist, publisher, author, keen tennis lover and the type of friend everyone would relish.
