Frank Lowy doc…a clip

Having survived the Holocaust, Sir Frank Lowy went on to become one of Australia’s wealthiest people, with a net worth of over $6 billion.

Now faced with the prospect of selling the multinational company he co-founded, Lowy is looking back on an extraordinary life in What Will Become of Us, premiering at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival on Thursday (May 2).

The film was directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Steven Cantor, who followed Lowy and writer David Kushner as they traced the steps of Lowy’s life to figure out the best path forward.

The scale of the project was not lost on Cantor, who had to work deliberately to reign in the enormity not just of a man’s life, but one so full of turbulence, injustice and triumph in the face of adversity — not to mention deep resonance in the present day.

 

“Frank has lived an extraordinary life, full of violence and heartache, tremendous risk and monumental achievement. It was complicated to encapsulate that in one feature-length film, particularly as we were also following a tension-fraught, present-day journey,” said Cantor in a statement.

“I suppose any film with a Holocaust theme is important, but at this time of tense talk around the subject of immigration, Frank’s is an exemplary rags-to-riches immigrant story.”

What Will Become of Us was produced by Stick Figure Productions, with Dani Drusin, Jamie Schutz and Nina Chaudry serving as producers, and Patty Newburge serving as executive producer.

It premieres May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Village Cinema East, with additional screenings May 3 and 4.
