Former ZFA man in Israel passes away
Frank Stein, former Director of the Zionist Federation of Australia’s office in Israel has died in Jerusalem.
Former president of the ZFA Ron Weiser who worked closely with him told J-Wire: “He was a large person physically and spiritually in everything he did in Israel for Australian Jewry. He was one of my closest friends.”
Frank Stein was born in Brisbane where he was active in Betar…a passion he continued when he moved to Sydney, adding Hineni to his community involvement. He moved to Israel about 20 years ago becoming active in dealing with the affairs of British Olim and was heavily involved in dealing with the aftermath of the 1997 Maccabiah bridge disaster.
Weiser added: “He will be remembered always for the 24/7 care he showed in helping Australians in Israel, including AUJS members on extended visits to Israel.”
Frank Stein became the “face of Australia” when he took up the role of ZFA director ten years ago. He retired a year ago, moving to South Africa where he worked as a shaleach.
His sister rushed from her Brisbane home to be at his bedside whn he passed away following a three months’ battle with cancer.
Frank Stein was never married.
Ron Weiser told J-Wire there would be a Shloshim service in his memory in Sydney at a date yet to be announced.
