It is the Minister’s first visit to Poland and the first by an Australian Foreign Minister since 2002.

More than 160,000 Australians have Polish ancestry bringing an element of importance to the Australia-Polish Security Agreement to which Minister Smith added his signature in order to make it easier for Australian Poles to access pensions.

Commenting on his trip, Smith said:  “I visited the Warsaw Ghetto where so many Jewish people suffered terribly during the war.”
