Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said today that Australia warmly welcomes the decision by Israel and the Palestinians to re-launch direct peace negotiations.

Minister Smith said: “The negotiations will commence on 2 September and will address final status issues, including settlements, borders and the status of Jerusalem.

The agreement represents an important step towards a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Australia commends both Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Abbas for agreeing to take part in these talks.

Australia has been a consistent supporter of a two-state solution where both Israelis and Palestinians live side-by-side in peace in their own states.

Australia recognises there will be many challenges ahead in the path to peace.

We urge all parties to refrain from any actions which could undermine trust and the climate for negotiations.

Australia will continue to actively support the peace process.”
