Fighting Slavery
Sydney’s Emanuel Synagogue will present a fascinating In Conversation, The War On Slavery featuring an international panel of experts on modern slavery, forced labour and human trafficking.
Despite being illegal around the world, 40-45 million people live in slavery.
Two thirds in our region.
A quarter, children.
The largest number of slaves the world has ever seen.
On Sunday July 7, The panel will comprise:
- Kevin Hyland OBE– Author and lead negotiator SDG 8.7, member of the Vatican’s Santa Marta group, former UK Independent Anti-slavery Commissioner. As Commissioner he led many international changes, bringing attention to human trafficking within the UN at the Security Council, the General Assembly and worked with other organisations. By securing a specific global goal he played a key role in establishing Alliance 8.7 at the UN and in releasing millions of dollars from various aid budgets for development and prevention of human trafficking.
- John McCarthy QC(Chair Sydney Archdiocese Anti-slavery Taskforce) As Ambassador to the Holy See (2012-2016) Mr McCarthy was closely involved with human rights issues, particularly the eradication of modern slavery and human trafficking: a cause which Pope Francis has made a worldwide priority.
- Jennifer Burn(NSW Interim Anti-slavery Commissioner, Director of Anti-slavery Australia and Professor of Law at the University of Technology Sydney). Anti-Slavery Australia is made up of a dedicated team of researchers, educators and lawyers dedicated to eliminating all forms of human trafficking and slavery through research, direct service and advocacy programs.
The discussion will be moderated by Jane Jeffes (Co-founder War On Slavery, former ABC Head of Religion & Ethics)
Explains Kevin Hyland: “With numbers increasing daily, it’s a global epidemic of abuse and inequality demanding urgent disruption to hold governments, businesses, investors to account.”
