Ron Hoenig farewelled Mr Cass in a speech to the NSW Parliament, in which he paid testament to Julian’s devotion to, and significant record of achievement for the Australian Jewish community.

At last week’s Shabbat service at Maroubra Synagogue Mr Hoenig presented Julian with a framed copy of the speech, a parting gift to thank him for his years of devoted service not just to the Maroubra synagogue but the wider Jewish community.

Julian Cass has served as Administrator of the Maroubra Synagogue since 2006 and a board director of Central Synagogue where for three years he was the convenor of the Hineni youth and welfare group.

He was instrumental in lobbying major supermarket chains Coles and Woolworths to expand their kosher food offerings in stores servicing large Jewish communities.

Ron Hoenig said:  “I have been proud to work with Julian as a Director of the Maroubra Synagogue, but I have been even prouder to call him my friend.

“With his retirement from his role as Administrator, our synagogue has lost a giant of the Sydney Jewish community.”
