Familiar names top the annual BRW magazine’s Rich 200 list.
Frank Lowy, Anthony Pratt, Ivan Glasenberg, Harry Triguboff and John Gandel all made the top 10 of the list, which was published on the magazine’s website on Wednesday afternoon.
Mining magnate Gina Rinehart kept her pole position, worth a lazy $22.02 billion, according to the Fairfax publication, although her wealth slid by $7.15 billion on last year.
Lowy, the Westfield co-founder, is in second spot. He accrued an extra $400 million this year, taking his wealth to $6.87 billion, BRW revealed.
Pratt and family earned an extra $500 million, amassing a fortune worth $5.95 billion to take fourth place after James Packer while South African émigré Ivan Glasenberg, the chief executive of Glencore Xstrata, lost $1.79 billion in the last year but is still valued at $5.61 billion. Glasenberg, who was number two in last year’s list, is now fifth.
Meriton chief Harry Triguboff, who began driving taxis when he first arrived here after the war, is in sixth position, worth $4.95 billion.
When asked by BRW if he thought his wealth had risen in the last year, Triguboff, who is in his 80s, quipped: “Of course it has gone up. You think I work for nothing? Only birds work for nothing. You think I’m a bird?”
Gandel, who is also in property, came in eighth with a fortune of $3.7 billion.
Celebrating its 30th year of publishing the Rich 200 list, BRW has revealed the names of those who have been listed every year since 1984. They include Lowy, Triguboff, Gandel and retailer Solomon Lew, who is worth $1.70 billion, as well as Melbourne property developer Maurice Alter, who is worth $480 million, according to this year’s list.
