The NSW Land and Environment Court is currently hearing evidence in order to make a ruling on a bid by the orthodox community of the Sydney suburb of St Ives to install an Eruv.Media reports state that around 3,000 Jewish residents in the leafy northern suburb would benefit from the Eruv.

The initial moves to build it started more than five years ago and the community may have a little longer to wait to learn the outcome of the present hearing.

An Eruv already exists in the Eastern Suburbs around the Bondi area and another is nearing completion in Maroubra.

I’m told there are 3,000 Jewish residnets in St Ives, of which approx. 10% are of the orthodox nature. A small minority in a larger community of 15,000. On an issue such as this, the Land and Environment Court would have some specialisation, but what of the social impact? Is their decision inclusive of this also? I hope so.
