Dr Peter Schiff has presented the 15th annual Peter Schiff Award to Associate Professor Mark Dean, senior staff specialist at Gosford Hospital in NSW.

Peter-Schiff-AwardThe award acknowledges personal efforts made in the fields of

  1. Research into the nature and use of blood products.
  2. Education of the medical community and special interest groups in the field of transfusion medicine and patient blood management.
  3. Encouraging and promoting the importance of blood and plasma donation and their appropriate clinical use leading to better health care in Australia and New Zealand      

 

The award was presented  at the 50th annual meeting of the Australia/New Zealand Society for Blood Transfusion (ANZSBT) at the Convention Centre, Perth.

Dr Schiff worked as Medical Director of the Bioplasma Division at CSL Ltd (formerly Commonwealth Serum Laboratories until its privatisation in the 1990s) in Melbourne from 1965. CSL produces a range of blood products from plasma that are used to treat a wide variety of medical conditions, such as bleeding disorders and diseases of the immune system.

The 2014 ANZSBT meeting was attended by around 1000 doctors, scientists and nurses, and was addressed by leading national and international speakers
