The Executive Council of Australian Jewry has responded to an article in “The Age” entitled “PM’s Jewish move queried”.

The article focuses on former Jewish director of corporate affairs for Fairfax Media American Bruce Wolpe who will return to Australia shortly to become Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s business liaison adviser.

The Age quotes from a memo issued by the PM’s Chief of staff Ben Hubbard stating that Mr Wolpe “will be responsible for liaison with the Australian business community and will also have a subsidiary role as liaison for the PM with the Jewish community”.

Peter Wertheim, the executive director of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry said:  “The appointment of Bruce Wolpe is welcome. However, the Jewish community did not seek a special liaison person with the Prime Minister.  The community through its representative organisations already enjoys an excellent relationship with the Prime Minister and the government, as well as with the Coalition and all major parties.  It is a matter for the Prime Minister how she organises her office.
