Oct-28 10am Dunera: 250 years of Beethoven: Beethoven and his deafness

Read on for article

Presented by Andy Bromberger as part of the 250 years of Beethoven series, this session explores Beethoven and his deafness.

It is often asked how a composer like Beethoven could have written such fulfilling music without hearing it. Instead, the question which should be asked is – what effect; mentally, physically and creatively, did going deaf have on a composer of Beethoven’s stature. These included suicidal thoughts, often difficult interpersonal relationships, the conversation books and the Heiligenstadt Testament. Most importantly though is the impact it had on his music.
