He’s never kept a diary before, and found keeping a Spiritual Diary for The Spirit of Things embarrassing, pretentious, but also very valuable. Howard Goldenberg is a physician who is used to making a prognosis of his patients’ health, but now he turns his attention to himself, and probes his conscience for the true meaning of his Jewish faith.

Being a physician in the outback and in the city, Dr Goldenberg finds his centre of calm in his faith. Saying his morning prayer in the Darwin airport and wearing his yarmulka under his baseball cap, Howard’s faith is strong, but also full of questions and some thoughtful revision.

Over several weeks, Howard, who is also an author (My Father’s Compass, 2007; Raft, 2009), kept a spiritual diary that spans his family, medical practice, and memories of his beloved late father, also a country doctor.

The repeat broadcast produced bt Rachael Kohn can be heard tomorrow [Tuesday] at 1:00pm.
