AFL icon Robert “Dipper” Dipierdomenico leaves for Israel today heading a delegation which will prepare the combined Israeli/Palestinian Peace Team for the AFL 2011 International Cup.

The competition will take place in Melbourne in August.

Last month AFL legend and former Sydney Swans captain Brett Kirk visited Israel to train with the side. Afterwards, Kirk said: “To think of what’s happening in this country at the moment, it takes a lot of courage to do what they’re doing.”

AFL chief Andrew Demetriou recently told the National Press Club in Canberra that in 2008 everyone thought it was “a ludicrous idea to bring Palestinians and Israelis together…but the Peace Team worked”.

The delegation leaving today will include Western Bulldogs board member Henry Jolson QC and was farewelled at a function held in Melbourne yesterday.
