Dayenu makes it a decade
Dayenu had no problem selecting a theme for this year’s Mardi Gras…it was their 10th anniversary.
More than 120 members of Sydney’s Jewish Gay and Lesbian community started their celebrations with a community Shabbat service at the Temple Emanuel, followed by a dinner.
Rabbi Jeffrey Kamins told J-Wire: “The Shabbat was dedicated to the Gay and Lesbian community and we had specially selected readings between the traditional prayers honouring their presence in the synagogue and acknowledging the pain many of them had experienced due to their personal choice of sexuality.”
Spokesman for Dayenu, Roy Freeman, said: “The service was amazing highlighted by the presence of Israeli singer Ivri Lider who sang for us. Our float at the Mardi Gras was designed around our 10th anniversary. I am very proud of the progress made by Dayenu in the nine years I have been associated with it but there is still a long way to go to get the wider community’s full acceptance. Many still find it very difficult to come out of the closet. It was very encouraging to have members of Netzer, AUJS and Habonim march with us…along with Ivri Lider”
He added: “Membership is growing steadily and we now have our own page on Facebook.”
