Mr Danby said that given the election date coincided with Yom Kippur, some local residents’ fear they could be disenfranchised and unable to participate in the election.

“It’s important that everyone has the chance to cast their vote at the next election, I know many appreciate Australia’s democracy. I want to ensure they get to cast their vote,” Mr Danby said.

“Melbourne Ports already has the highest number of early voters and postal voters in the country with 15% of all voters choosing this voting option in the past 2 Federal Elections. But with Yom Kippur coinciding, I expect many more, like me, will want to observe the special day in our calendar,” Mr Danby said.

“Today I wrote to the independent Electoral Commissioner at the Australian Electoral Commission requesting an additional early voting centre to be located in Caulfield with extended hours of operation to include Sundays before the election,” Mr Danby said.

“I have also made representations to the Special Minister of State and the Prime Minister who have both been supportive of my requests to the Electoral Commissioner to ensure everyone has the opportunity to vote.”
