Rabbi Ari Ruben has told J-Wire he not received any reports of any incidents affecting the community in North Queensland.

He told J-Wire: “I texted all my contacts there. Airlie Beach lost power last night but Mackay are fine. They’re all just bunkered  down hoping no damage was done. I’ll contact them again later today.

Speaking from home in Cairns Rabbi Ruben said that there is no Jewish families in Bowen and Ayr “that I know of”.

He added that there Jews living in Airlie Beach, Mackay and Proserpine.

Rabbi Ruben said that Chabad would be on hand if needed to could send people or supplies to the general community.

J-Wire asked about Israeli backpackers visiting the area. He said: “We put word out in the Israeli groups before hand and they all made precautions and I don’t think any were there at the time we told them all to go either way south or way north.”
