Lord Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth has addressed the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation following the dedication of two new Sifrei Torah scrolls.

At today’s special service, the Chief Rabbi Spoke of how our ancestors invented a workable alphabet which enabled universal literacy.

Rabbi Sacks told more than 400 people who packed the historic Shul that the Koran refers to Jews as the People of the Book.

East Melbourne Shul is celebrating 155 years of continuous services.

The new scrolls were dedicated in the Queen’s Hall in the Victorian State Parliament and were paraded under a chupah through the Parliament Gardens and along Albert St to the East Melbourne Synagogue.
