Sunday, the fifth night of Chanukah, marked a significant milestone for Chabad North Queensland as they commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s public menorah lighting initiative.

The event featured a flower menorah at The Pier Shopping Centre in Cairns.

Rabbi Ari Rubin said it was inspired by the quote, “They tried to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds.”

He expressed his pride in the organization’s positive impact on the community, providing a welcoming space for Jews from diverse backgrounds.

The celebration offered a range of activities, including crafts, food, and entertainment, catering to all ages. Community members gathered to celebrate the miracle of Chanuka.

Aaron Standley, a community member, praised the event. He said: “Tonight, we’ve seen the power of community and the beauty of Jewish tradition, it makes me proud to display my Jewish faith”

Chabad North Queensland’s commitment to serving the local Jewish community remains strong as they look to the future. In addition to the Cairns event, Chabad North Queensland hosted a celebration in Townsville the following night. Despite logistical challenges and a five-hour trip each way, the organization’s dedication to reaching and celebrating with the Jewish community in Townsville demonstrates its commitment to serving Jewish individuals and families across the region.
