Attending his first Canberra Jewish community meeting this week, Dan Avital told members he was not a rabbi.

J-Wire sets the record straight. Dan Avital and his wife Naomi have settled in the Nation’s capital with the intention of establishing Chabad in Canberra. As previously reported, he plans to establish a Mikvah for general community use and he and his wife  Naomi also have intentions of founding an educational project. At the meeting last night, he told community members he was not a Rabbi but that some learned Jews acquired the name. He is currently a student.

Former President Athol Morris told J-Wire: “I would dispute claims he is a community leader here as he has not established one yet and it is a matter for concern that media or diplomatic personnel may choose to ask him to represent the community for comments.  I hope he loves Canberra, and prospers here. I welcome him as a Jew.”

Canberra Community President Anita Shroot added: “We welcome Chabad to Canberra and look forward to working with Dan.”
