Cents and Senses
Jewish Care Victoria has launched its first digital crowdfunding campaign, ‘Cents for Senses’ to raise funds for vital equipment to be used in the adult and children’s sensory rooms located in the new Disability Respite Centre in Caulfield.
Jewish Care will run the campaign through the online crowdfunding platform, Chuffed.org from 21 July until 19 August, aiming to raise $21,530 for essential multi-sensory equipment used to stimulate and calm the senses of adults and children with disabilities.
A sensory room is designed to develop senses through specific lighting, music and tactile objects. Sensory equipment assists in developing important life skills including vocalisation, gross motor skills and colour recognition, and can be used as a therapy for adults and children with limited communication abilities.
Jewish Care CEO Bill Appleby said that “Jewish Care is excited to launch its pilot crowdfunding campaign. With the help and engagement of the community, we will be able to provide our clients with the most up-to-date sensory room possible.”
While the new equipment used in the sensory rooms will benefit clients, it will also impact their families positively.
Sandi, mother of a 20-year-old client says, “Like most people with a disability, our daughter has some sense deprivation and some heightened senses. The sensory room will provide her with a single focus in a relaxed controlled environment. This will calm her anxiety, promoting general wellbeing and good health.”
“There will be so many benefits for our daughter and it is really exciting to be involved in this drive. We are so looking forward to the new Jewish Care Respite Centre – the benefits to her and our family are so profound that we could not imagine life without this support.”
