Celebrating Israel
The 20th anniversary of NCJWA’s Celebrating Israel annual event will mark ”The Vote” in 1947.
Every Nation’s history has days and events that forever mark crossroads in time. Initiated in 2005 by National Council of Jewish Women of Australia, ”Celebrating Israel” marks one of the most defining dates in the history of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. It was on the 29 November 1947, that UN General Assembly passed ”The Vote” on Resolution 181, The Partition Plan, calling for the establishment of a Jewish State alongside an Arab State, leading to the establishment of the state of Israel.
It was Australian Minister for External Affairs, and chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Palestine, Doc Herbert Evatt, who accomplished what was once impossible – mobilising the world to realise the Zionist dream for a secure Jewish State. On that day, in which Australia played a major role, we were given the opportunity to grasp hold of the book of history in order to write down our own destiny.
”The Vote” and the implications then and to date are the foundation of Celebrating Israel. Although successfully passed 77 years ago, the implications of the vote are still felt deeply today as outcomes for peace in the Middle East have not been achieved.
Australia/Israel’s ongoing common interest and excellent relations have been embedded in our society throughout our shared history, focusing on values of social cohesion and working together for the benefit of all citizens in Australia ”As we are one”
NCJWA Celebrating Israel event is co-hosted by ZFA, ZCNSW, ECAJ, NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, UIA, JNF, NCJWA NSW, Hamoadon HaIsraeli, TWI, and supported by the Embassy of Israel in Canberra.
