Catholic chaplain is halachically Jewish
Rabbi Dr Dovid Slavin joined his fellow chaplains recently in visiting the Lakemba Mosque for the annual NSW Ambulance Chaplains Conference.
Rabbi Slavin was the first non-Christian chaplain when he was appointed in 2001.
Newly-appointed Catholic Chaplain Craig Walshe approached Rabbi Slavin to tell him how his maternal grandparents migrated to Australia in the 1930’s and how 17 years ago when he was 50 was told by his mother that her parents were Jewish.
Craig who had spent many years as a missionary in India was overwhelmed with the disclosure.
Rabbi Slavin told J-Wire: “The staff at the mosque were very welcoming.”
