Call to ban lawyer from practicing
Victoria’s Legal Services Commissioner has called for lawyer Alex Lewenberg to be banned from practicing following a verdict finding the lawyer guilty of misconduct following his rebuking of the Jewish victim of child sexual abuse for cooperating with police.
Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper reports that Nicholas Green QC told the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal that criminal lawyer Lewenberg “must be kept safe from himself. The public has to be kept safe from him” adding that he should be disqualified “for a substantial period”.
The tribunal was told that Lewenberg twice remarked that Jews should not aid in the prosecution of another Jew.
The newspaper reported that the 75-yr-old Lewenberg apologised yesterday for the remarks he made in 2011.
His client David Cyprys was jailed for sexually assaulting children in the 1980s and 1990s.
Green called for a ban of up to two years.
