Brisbane’s Jewish population on the rise
2006 census results show a 13% increase in the Jewish population of Queensland.Scott Leonard, the secretary of the Brisbane Progressive Jewish Congregation, told a meeting that plans were underway to establish a new Progressive synagogue in the city and that Brisbane’s Jewish population had grown 12.5% in the five year period between 2001 and 2006.
He said: “”Some Jewish demographers have suggested that the figures may be 30% higher.” Leonard added that traditionally many Jews had refrained from detailing their religious persuasion on census forms.
