Bringing Australian theatre to the Big Apple
Sydneysider Matt Foster of “Shmux in Tux” Kosher Theatre Sports fame, and his wife, Kate have established a new theatre production company in New York.
Australian Made Entertainment is an independent arts organisation dedicated to bringing Australian works to the United States. The aim is to produce theatre and film with a distinct Australian flavour, whether it explores aspects of Australian culture or simply showcases the rich talents of Australian artists. In addition to producing classic works from established playwrights, they hope to introduce American audiences to emerging Australian writers, as well as provide opportunities for Australian performers, directors and other entertainment professionals.
Their first production, Cosi by Australian Playwright, Louis Nowra, opened on 7 September 2012. With the setting of Aussie lamingtons, caramel slices, ANZAC biscuits and mini meat /vegetable pies in the foyer of Urban Stages Theatre, off Broadway on West 30th Street, the opening night of Australian Made Entertainment’s inaugural show hit the stage. Loads of laughter and applause were heard from the mainly American audience with hardly a seat to spare. The Aussie humour and pathos was well played by all the cast. Their accents were very convincing especially those who were not Aussie-born. The entire production was extremely well received and profuse congratulations go to the cast and crew for a marvellous evening of superb entertainment.
Such Australian talent, abundant both in Australia and abroad is to be encouraged and applauded, and should be supported by our community. Making a name in the Arts and Entertainment business can be heartbreaking and difficult even in the best of times. Such initiatives as Australian Made Entertainment require nurturing and are deserving of success.
