Jewish Care Victoria’s Healthy Communities team have this week released a new series of mental health awareness postcards to coincide with Men’s Health Week (June 15 – 21).

Aimed at encouraging men to reach out and connect, the free postcards feature eye-catching designs, offer practical help-seeking information, and highlight some of the damaging gender-based stereotypes faced by men; in particular, the notion that ‘big boys don’t cry’.

“We know that there are a number of barriers for men and boys when it comes to reaching out for help or talking about their emotional experiences – in particular the pressure that many feel to be strong, stoic, and self-sufficient,” said Cassandra Barrett, Team Leader of Healthy Communities.

“In addition to impacting negatively on men’s health and wellbeing, we know that gender-based stereotypes such as these are also a key driver of family violence. Our new postcard campaign hopes to challenge this belief. There should never be shame in vulnerability.”

The postcard series will be distributed to schools, shuls, and other organisations across the community and can be obtained by contacting Jewish Care’s Healthy Communities team.

To order copies of the free postcards for your group or workplace, please contact Naomi Sherborne, Health Promotion Officer on 8517 5919 or [email protected]
