Bialik student wins trip to Israel for My Family Story project
For the seventh consecutive year, a Bialik College student has won a trip to Israel to be a part of the annual My Family Story ceremony and exhibition at Beit Hatsufot – “The Museum of the Jewish People”.Year 8 Bialik student Tye Samuels will visit Israel in June, where he will attend a two-day celebratory event, which includes tours, gatherings and an award ceremony.
Tye’s submission for the project was a “customised Samuels/Birnbaum family version of the well-known game Monopoly.” Tye explained, “I chose to create something universally recognisable, a Monopoly board that shows my personal roots and the paths my ancestors chose or those that were chosen for them. Places on the board are countries and cities where my ancestors lived. ‘Jail’ is Shomberg Concentration Camp, where my great uncle was imprisoned during the Holocaust. The ‘money’ in the game represents the different currencies my ancestors used at the time they lived in various countries. The cards use real situations that affected choices made by my family members, paths they took and where they ended up.”
Congratulations also to Isabella Stein, whose project, Through Their Eyes will be shown at the gallery at Beit Hatsufot. Isabella will also be receiving a certificate of special recognition from the museum for her contribution.
Over 20,000 students from 155 worldwide institutions participated in this year’s project, with the final selection leading to only 48 winners. Bialik’s Year 7 students create My Family Story projects during their b’nei mitzvah journey and some of these are submitted to compete for a place in the Beit Hatsufot competition.
