Beth Din rabbis appeal contempt of court judgment
Four rabbis found in contempt of court in Sydney’s Supreme Court are appealing the judgement.
A spokesperson for Rabbi Moshe Gutnick, Rabbi Yoram Ulman, Rabbi Michael Chriqui and Rabbi Eli Schlanger. said today: “The Beth Din has appealed the judgment handed down by Justice Sackar on 14 December 2017 and the decision in regards to penalty handed down on Thursday 29 March 2018, both as to the underlying findings OF contempt and the amount of the penalties imposed against each of the members of the Beth Din.
The Rabbis intend to honour the judge’s ruling until such time as the decision is overturned.”
Justice John Sackar wrote in his judgement that the rabbis had threatened religious sanctions on Reuven Barukh if he failed to front the Beth Din on a commercial matter. Barukh had insisted on the matter being heard in a secular court.
Justice Sackar had suggested fines of $20000 to Rabbi Gutnick and $10,000 to the three others.
