Back to schools
John Robertson, the Leader of the Opposition in the NSW Parliament has made a whistle-stop tour of three Jewish dayschools in Sydney.
The Parliamentary Labor leader visited Mt Sinai College in Maroubra, Kesser Torah College in Dover Heights and the Emanuel School in Randwick.
NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson yesterday met with teachers, parents and students at the Emanuel School, Mount Sinai College and Kesser Torah College to talk about the impacts the O’Farrell Government’s $1.7 billion cut to education funding is having in the classroom.
Mr Robertson is visiting 40 schools in 40 days as part of the fight against the O’Farrell Government’s unprecedented attack on education in NSW.
The Opposition Leader was joined by the Member for Maroubra, Michael Daley and Member for Heffron, Ron Hoenig on the visits.
“Every school and every student will be hit by the O’Farrell Government’s $1.7 billion cut to education,” said Mr Robertson today.
“It was an absolute pleasure to visit these three outstanding schools; however we don’t want to see their great work and achievements threatened by the O’Farrell Government’s slash and burn attitude towards education in this State.
“The school communities have told me that they are concerned they will have to cut or restrict programs because of the funding cuts from the NSW Government.
“In particular, the schools were concerned they would be forced to make cuts to specialist learning support classes, including for students who needed extra assistance with intensive reading and writing.”
Mr Robertson called on the O’Farrell Government to reverse the school funding cuts – particularly after the Auditor General revealed the Treasurer made a $1 billion mistake in the State’s finances.
“Off the back of the Auditor General’s revelation that the O’Farrell Government’s budget figures were wrong by $1 billion – these cuts should be reversed immediately,” said Mr Robertson.
“This campaign will be fought and won at the school gate – which is why I am visiting 40 schools in 40 days to increase the pressure on the Government to stop the cuts.
“Every child deserves a world class education and it’s incredibly important that local parents get involved in the campaign to stop the cuts.”
