The award will be presented in recognition of Eddie Vaysbakh’s participation in a highly dangerous operation at a fuel terminal at Banksmeadow in July 2013 when 130,000 litres of petrol gushed out exposing a large area to a massive risk of explosion.

Eddie was part of a team from Fire and Rescue NSW which attended the site during the night, made an assessment of the extraordinary situation, secured the leak and then contained the risk of explosion by spraying foam on the pool of leaked fuel some 50 metres long.

Eddie, now based at Bondi Fire Station, is a member of the Sydney Jewish community, having arrived here as a child refugee from the USSR.

The award will be presented at the annual Jewish Communal Remembrance Day Commemoration and Wreath Laying ceremony to be held in the distinguished presence of His Excellency, the Governor of NSW on Sunday 6 November at 9.45 am at Sydney Jewish Museum. The Guest Speaker will be Jillian Skinner MP, NSW Minister for Health.
