Some names to follow as the 2022 Australian Open tennis championships start tomorrow in Melbourne.
Diego Schwartzman is a 29-yr-old Argentinian seeded number 13 if the championship goes ahead as planned.
Last year he was beaten by fellow Jew Aslan Karatsev in the third round
He has beaten Tsitsipas in the past but John Isner and Daniil Medevev could be facing him at the other end of the court as the tournament progresses. He was beaten by Isner in their only meeting and has competed against Medevev six times without success.
22-yr-old Denis Shapovalov seeded 14. Born in Tel Aviv, before he was one, his family moved to Canada where they settled in Vaughan, Ontario.
His father is Russian Orthodox Christian but his mother who coaches him alongside Mikhail Youzhny insists he remains Jewish. Nevertheless, Shapovalov has been reported to be wearing a crucifix when playing from time to time. He has not been past the third round.
He now calls the Bahamas home.
Aslan Karatsev yesterday won the ATP Championship in Sydney yesterday, defeating Scotland’s Andy Murray 6-3, 6-3.
Last year, he reached the semi-finals where he was knicked out by Novak Djokovic.
The 28-yr-old lives in Moscow but lived in Israel since he was 3, moving back to Russia ten years later.
His mother’s grandfather is Jewish.
Karatsev, who speaks English, Russian and Hebrew fluently, is seeded 18.
His mother and sister still live in Israel.
Elina Svitolina is recognised by Wikipedia as being Jewish but there is no mention of her religion except the Infosports website which confirms it.
The 27-yr-old is seeded 15, she lists London and Odessa as her homes.
Camila Giorgi could face Ash Barty in the third round of the championship.
This will be the tenth visit to Melbourne for the 30-yr-old Italian star who has been seeded 30.
Naomi Osaka could well be the opponent Madison Brengle will face if the 35-yr-old American wins her first-round match. Madison has played and beaten Osaka in the distant past. She is unseeded in this year’s championship.
