Appeal for support – fundraising function for Sydney’s Parramatta Synagogue

Read on for article

In 1949, in a house at Pendle Hill, Sydney, Morry, Alf and Mark Borman, Lou Klein, Sidney Sinclair and their families met to establish a synagogue and formal Jewish education for their children.  They were later joined by more than a dozen other visionaries in their important mission.70 years on and the synagogue is still serving the Jewish community of the greater Western Suburbs of Sydney.  Apart from religious worship, the synagogue provides the premises for a non-secular community kindergarten; hosts both secular and non-secular community activities; provides a Sunday school learning centre for the Jewish children of our region; supports adult learning classes and welcomes all who wish to attend regular services.

The synagogue is now in need of some major capital works.  In the past, the small community has supported building and maintenance of the synagogue, built and rebuilt a ministerial residence and have built a kindergarten facility.  The capital work now required is principally the replacement of an ageing asbestos roof and there is also a need for the construction of a library and meeting rooms as our community develops.

The synagogue is hosting an afternoon Deluxe High Tea at the National Council of Jewish Women Hall in Woollahra on 24th November.  This is an important fundraising function for the synagogue and the committee would like to invite the larger Sydney Jewish community to celebrate our 70th Anniversary with us.

Advertisements can also be placed in a celebratory journal, that will also be available for viewing on the synagogue’s Facebook and web pages.

We have advertised extensively, emailed relatives, friends and representatives throughout the community for support for our function.  We appreciate that funds are scarce and everyone in the community is looking to build on their facilities.  Please consider that we are the only Jewish community beyond inner Sydney serving the west and north-west of the Sydney region and everything possible needs to be done to ensure we continue to provide the Jewish community of the region.  To date, the attendance numbers are not sufficient to warrant continuing with the function.  We are therefore appealing for further support.
