…and a new Broadcasting Entity is Born
Hot on the heels of the demise of Melbourne community radio station Lion FM follows the establishment of JBC – Jewish Broadcasting for the community.
JBC is being chaired by Dr Paul Gardner who formerly headed the Anti-Defamation Commission. He told J-Wire: “We are well aware that ACMA has told The Jewish Community Council of Victoria that they would not continue Lion’s licence as there are too many community stations. But our organisation has been established to allow for a much broader take on community life allowing for diverse interests from diverse groups.”
In a statement released by JBC, The Jewish Community Council of Victoria president John Searle, said that he was “more than interested to work with a group of people who are aiming to assist the community in media matters.”
JBC’s aims include the support, development and promotion of Jewish broadcasting and media for use within the Community and to allow for individual organisations and associations to “structure, develop and deliver” quality programs.
Originating in Melbourne, JBC is planning media programs which aim to be “open and transparent with a wide representation from all sections of the community” which it intends to eventually reach communities in other states.
With an AGM planned for later in the year, Dr Gardner and his eight board members has already adopted a constitution . Membership will be open to any member of the Jewish community interested in promoting the broadcasting of Jewish programs on radio, TV and the Internet.
Dr Gardner was adamant that JBC is not a replacement for the doomed Lion FM. He said: “Perhaps one day we could approach the Australian Communications and Media Authority with a broad community broadcasting proposal…but that would be a long way off and there is much to do beforehand.”
JBC hopes to become a member of the The Jewish Community Council of Victoria.
