An introduction to Beit Rafel
A unique Melbourne organisation cares for the physical and emotional needs of families, whilst their loved ones are undergoing hospital treatment, by providing them with ‘a home away from home’ – a quiet place where they can stay and recover their emotions in a private setting.
The Beit Rafael Benevolent Institution, was established by Adina and Shimon Allen in 2012 and is registered with the Australia Taxation Office as a ‘Public Benefit Institution’ with fully tax deductible (DGR) status.
The organisation is named in honour of Adina’s father, Rafael Birnbaum and the name RAFAEL is the name of one of G-D’s four ministering angels, specifically charged with the healing of the unwell.
To date, Beit Rafael has assisted hundreds of families. In cases a family may only require the apartment for the day, in other circumstances the apartments are used for weeks or even months at a time.
An additional Beit Rafael initiative is the Medical Shuttle. This vehicle, with an in-built wheelchair facility, assists community members who require transportation to and from medical treatments and appointments. A team of trained and dedicated volunteers are available to drive patients at pre-arranged times.
