AIJAC hosts Israeli Labor MK Merav Michaeli
The Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC) recently hosted Israeli Knesset Member Merav Michaeli at a Sydney luncheon attended by leading media, political and trade union figures.
Regarded as a rising star of the Centre-Left, the MK is in Australia as a guest of Habonim-Dror and Ameinu.
“The frank and wide-ranging discussion provided a unique opportunity to engage with a prominent Israeli personality, and the journalists, party activists and others present greatly valued the experience,” AIJAC Executive Director Dr Colin Rubenstein said.
“Merav Michaeli contributed to increased understanding and a deepening of the positive relationship between Israelis and Australians.”
The MK shared her personal journey, through a political family, the media, social activism and advocacy of women’s rights, which culminated in her being elected to the 19th Knesset in 2013, and while doing so made observations on domestic Israeli matters, the Middle East, global issues and human rights challenges.
She reiterated her desire to see a two-state solution but said unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state was harmful to the Palestinians’ own interests. She also criticised the anti-Israel boycott movement.
Michaeli also addressed an AIJAC lunch in Melbourne, in conjunction with Ameinu, earlier this week.
