ADC remembers January 27
Today marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day, observed annually on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps.
Australia’s Anti-Defamation Commission has released a statement saying:”We observe this solemn occasion and remember history’s darkest chapter by honouring the six million Jews and millions of non-Jews who were brutally murdered by Hitler’s Nazi regime. Australia is home to one of the largest populations of Holocaust survivors in the world, and we pay tribute to the brave men and women who triumphed over unfathomable evil and continue to inspire us with their indomitable spirit.
We recall that the Holocaust did not begin with the bricks of Auschwitz, but with words and laws that dehumanised Jews. And we remember the depthless courage of thousands of Righteous Gentiles who, while most watched the horrors unfold and remained silent, risked their own lives to save others. Today, we recommit to support efforts to uphold the human rights of all people, stand firm against those who seek to distort, diminish and deny the historical truth, and promise to protect the memory of the Holocaust.
As the survivors grow older, let us rededicate ourselves to teach the lessons of the Shoah to present and future generations so as to ensure that such atrocities are never allowed to happen again. On this sombre and sacred day we vow ‘Never Again’.”
