This month, the Maccabiah torch arrived in Australia, marking a significant moment in its international journey toward the 2025 Maccabiah Games in Israel. The flame, a symbol of Jewish unity and pride, touched down at Sydney’s Bondi Beach after travelling more than 15,000 kilometres from Jerusalem.

On the beach, the torch was greeted by a crowd of supporters, including members of Australia’s renowned lifesaving community. Among them were young Jewish volunteer lifesavers on patrol, proudly standing beside the torch and bringing a sense of ceremony and joy to one of the country’s most iconic locations.

David Goldman, General Manager of Maccabi Australia, described the torch’s journey as more than a celebration. “As part of its journey through Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, the torch will make stops at some of the country’s most iconic locations, as well as Jewish day schools, Maccabi clubs, other Jewish organisations, and retirement homes, spreading a message of unity and community,” he said.

“The torch will ultimately return to Israel, where it will light the cauldron at the opening of the Maccabiah Games in July. This symbolic journey serves as a reminder of the enduring bond between Australia and Israel, and the power of sport and community to bring people together.”

The 2025 Maccabiah, often referred to as M25, is expected to be the largest edition of the Games to date, with over 10,000 athletes from more than 80 countries. First held in 1932, the Games have grown into one of the largest sporting events in the world, offering a space for Jewish athletes to compete at a high level while building global community ties.

Following its stops in Australia, the torch is scheduled to travel to Mexico and the United States before returning to Israel for the opening ceremony in July. At each destination, the flame is igniting something more than just a cauldron. It is rekindling shared memories, collective pride, and a renewed sense of connection across continents.
