A Shavuot message from Mark Coure, NSW Minister for Multiculturalism
I send my best wishes to everyone in the Jewish community in New South Wales celebrating Shavuot, or the Festival of Weeks.
While originating as a thanksgiving for the ancient mid-summer harvest, this festival also commemorates the giving of the Law.
It marks the occasion to give thanks for the Torah and is a reminder of the importance of honouring the Ten Commandments, the cornerstone of many faiths.
Shavuot celebrations also show the wonderful diversity of our multicultural, multifaith State and strengthen the mutual respect that unifies us.
As Minister for Multiculturalism, I thank the Jewish community for your continued efforts to share your culture and heritage with those across New South Wales.
I also thank you for your unwavering support of our many multicultural and faith groups, as you work to strengthen our communities through cooperation and collaboration.
You have shown how the spiritual values of Judaism underpin your valuable contributions to our society.
I wish you a happy, healthy and peaceful Shavuot.
